Louisiana lawmaker introduces bill to add kratom to Schedule I

Today, we happened to stumble across a bill that was introduced by Louisiana Representative J. Kevin Pearson in an effort to ban kratom. Louisiana House Bill No. 19 proposes to add Mitragynine, 7-Hydroxymitragynine, and Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl to Schedule I of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law. If this bill passes as is, kratom would be classified in the same category and carry similar penalties as Heroin, LSD, DMT, PCP, and others.

During the 2012 Louisiana Regular Legislative Session, State Representative A.G. Crowe sponsored a similar bill to outlaw kratom. Due to strong support from the kratom community, Louisiana Senators were properly educated about kratom and it’s beneficial properties. They amended the bill to allow the sale of kratom to persons 18 years of age or older. Governor Bobby Jindal signed the bill into law on May 31st, 2012.

The 2014 Louisiana Regular Legislative Session convenes at 12:00pm (noon) on March 10, 2014. We will be watching the progress of this bill very closely over the next couple of months and will keep everyone posted.

A petition has been started at We encourage everyone to please sign the petition. We also ask that you write Louisiana Representative J. Kevin Pearson regarding Louisiana House Bill 19.
